ArtScreen is a visual art project aimed at enabling artists with disability to develop their careers by creating work in the increasingly prevalent format of video art.

The successful applicant will be mentored by experienced video artist Dr Zanny Begg to create a video artwork which explores identity and social connectedness in urban spaces.

ArtScreen is an initiative of Accessible Arts – NSW’s peak arts and disability organisation – in partnership with inclusive screen production school Bus Stop Films, Western Sydney community creative hub I.C.E. and video art streaming service Prototype. The project is being co-funded by the City of Sydney.

The production budget of $15,000 includes $7500 in equipment and facilities hire from I.C.E. as well as the support of students from Bus Stop Films. Prototype will have an option to screen the artwork. ArtScreen is a pilot project for an expanded version of the initiative which may be delivered in the future.

Accessible Arts CEO Kerry Comerford: “We’re excited to be starting the year by providing an opportunity for artists and filmmakers with disability to explore the creative potential of video art, which is becoming increasingly popular due to mobile phones and other digital technologies.

“Like all our projects, ArtScreen is about evening up the creative playing field for artists with disability who don’t always get to develop their careers in the same way as artists without disability due to negative attitudes and other barriers.

“We’re looking forward to working with all our partners on this trial project and we hope the full-scale initiative will get green lit soon and provide more opportunities for artists with disability to explore and upskill in the burgeoning field of video art.”

Applicants for ArtScreen must identify as being Deaf and/or a person with disability, must be emerging or mid-career visual artists or filmmakers and must reside in NSW. Applicants do not require prior experience working with video as a creative format. Applicants must supply a creative concept and project budget.
