Time Portrait is a new dance directed by choreographer Lee Serle.

This new work began as a site-responsive work developed in 2019 during an artist residency at the Clothing Store Studios at Carriageworks, Sydney. This first iteration saw Serle re-examine his archive of solo choreography of the last decade, extracting and re-contextualising fragments from these works against the architecture and historical resonances of the site.

This solo work is the anchor for Time Portrait: Group Dance that has been developed independently in Melbourne with choreographers and collaborators; Jo Lloyd, Melanie Lane, Rebecca Jensen and Benjamin Hurley, who, unburdened by structure, have agency to change the course of action. An ever shifting sound work is composed live by artist Gail Priest, with stage design by Anna Cordingley.

Serle has gathered together some of Australia’s most accomplished artists for the world premiere of Time Portrait at The Substation.
